The subconscious mind can be likened to an iceberg, and we only
have conscious access to the one tenth above water.
However, all our habits, beliefs, behaviour and thought patterns
are stored in the nine tenths below, to which we can gain access
using hypnosis. |
|
Why Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a state of mind characterized by relaxed brain waves
and a state of highly focused attention. Hypnosis and hypnotic suggestions
have played a major role in healing for thousands of years. According
to the World Health Organization, over 90% of the general population
can be hypnotized.
Hypnosis is a perfectly normal state that just about everyone has
experienced. What we call "highway hypnosis" is a natural hypnotic
state. You drive somewhere and don't remember driving or even remember
seeing the usual landmarks - you are on automatic pilot. The natural
hypnotic state also exists when you become so involved in a book,
TV show or some other activity that everything else is blocked out.
Someone can talk to you and you don't even see or hear them, or
you are vaguely aware of them in the background but prefer to stay
focused on the TV. Whenever you concentrate that strongly, you automatically
slip into the natural hypnotic state.
Similarly, we often become so drawn into the emotion of a sad film
in the cinema that we cry, although we know rationally that the
people in the film are only actors. This is just another example
of everyday hypnosis. So we are all very familiar with hypnotic
process and hypnotic feelings, we just don’t usually call
it hypnosis.
The hypnotic state, by itself, is only useful for the physical
and mental relaxation it produces. The real importance of hypnosis
to the healing and emotional change process is that while you are
in the hypnotic state, your mind is open and receptive to suggestions.
Positive and healing suggestions are able to sink deeply into your
mind much more quickly and strongly than when you are in a hypnotic
state. |
All of our habitual
and behavior controlling thoughts reside in what is called our subconscious
mind. It's called that because it is deeper than our conscious mind,
below our level of consciousness and we are unaware of many of the
thoughts and feelings that reside there, although we experience
their effect.
Anybody who has ever told themselves "I'll never repeat that
behaviour again (smoke, eat too much, over-react etc) but has then
gone on to do that very thing, has experienced just how powerful
our subconscious mind can be. Our conscious minds can use willpower
for a while, but the subconscious will always win out in the end
(which is why diets don't work in the long run).

If you have a long standing problem you have no doubt tried every
avenue to solve it through using the conscious mind to no avail.
In addition to the root cause of the problem, life has added various
stresses and strains to which we are all subject and eventually
the mind can hold no more and produces a symptom e.g panic attacks
or negative reactions to certain people or places.
Using hypnotherapy you can find and remove the root cause and
also relieve the symptom or symptoms which are distressing you.
Hypno-analysis is the ideal method of releasing negative beliefs,
thoughts and habits, it can be likened to a spring-clean for the
mind!

|
When the subconscious mind fills up with stresses, hypnotherapy can provide a spring clean. |
There are basically two types of hypnotherapy - suggestion therapy and
analytical therapy, and they are often used together. Suggestion therapy
is used for simpler problems such as smoking, exam worries, stress, simple
phobias and for increasing motivation. Analytical therapy is needed where
the problem is more complex, deep rooted or long standing and this type
of therapy finds and removes the root cause of the problem.
Some of the common types of problems which can be helped with hypnotherapy include:
*Releasing fears, phobias and anxieties- examples
include letting go of fear of flying, fear of animals or insects, fear
of the dentist.
*Releasing excess weight and maintaining your desired weight permanently.
*Stopping smoking easily without cravings or gaining weight.
*Improving self confidence, reducing stress, feeling
better about yourself generally.
*Alleviating problems such as IBS (irritable bowel
syndrome), high blood pressure, migraines, some skin disorders, asthma
and allergies.
*Improving concentration and motivation for study, exams and sports.
*Children's issues such as bed-wetting, hair-pulling, lack of confidence. This is just a brief list, any problem which is psychosomatic (caused by the mind) can be helped with hypnotherapy.
